Eclipse 99

Images and movies

• "Mr. Eclipse" himself, Fred Espenak, has some excellent images of the eclipse and his observing site in Turkey.

• Some excellent images on Bob Yen's eclipse photography site

• The British Astronomical Association's eclipse Web page has links to lots of good images

• 10 minutes of streaming video from Germany - through clouds, but nice nonetheless, and has an excellent soundtrack (requires Real Video player)

• METEOSAT movies (AVI format, can be played on Macs with QuickTime 4) of:
  • the passage of the moon's shadow over the Near East, northeast Africa, and India (METEOSAT-5), and

  • the passage of the moon's shadow over Europe and North Africa (METEOSAT-7)

  The METEOSAT movies were processed by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

• OK, they're not eclipse images, because SOHO is farther away than the moon, but if you want to know what the Sun looked like in the EUV during totality (and before) - and perhaps be reminded that the corona is three-dimensional, check out the EIT coordinated observations page

Eclipse research

• U. of Delaware - NASA Goddard eclipse experiment

  A team from the University of Delaware and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center carried out an eclipse experiment in Turkey to determine coronal temperatures and solar wind speeds

• An eclipse corona prediction

  The MHD modellers of the solar physics group of SAIC have made their prediction of the appearance of the corona during the total solar eclipse of 1999 August 11 available on the Web.
